November in Review

I can't believe we're a week into December right now! I feel like once December hits, it's just non-stop busy chaos until after the new year starts. I just finished up with finals and school this week, so it will be nice not having to worry about schoolwork for the next couple weeks.

Pastels, Leopard Print, and Darth Vader

So here’s some of the goodness I’ve been working on lately!

I’ve never been huge on pastels, but lately that’s changing! It must be spring.

These piano cameos were made for my friend, Velma. Her and her husband, Steve, are my absolute favorite regulars at the pub I work at. Every year, they visit Las Vegas. They have friends there who are dueling pianists, so they asked me to make a pair of piano pendants for them! This is what I came up with.This was a custom photo cameo for my friend, Sky.One of my lovely Etsy customers requested a pendant with leopard print and Bettie Page. I love both of those things, so of course I was excited to do so! I decided to make the clay setting leopard print patterned, which meant making a clay cane for the first time.In my Polymer Clay class, we were very briefly shown how to make clay canes, so I had some basic knowledge of the process. I ended up getting it right on the first try, and made quite a few leopard print settings. It was really fun to do, and I liked the way it turned out. I’ll probably experiment with canes and patterns a bit more soon!

Put Glitter on All The Things!

After falling in love with the galaxy rings in my last “Lovely Things” post, I decided “hey, I bet I could make those!”  (I find myself saying that phrase quite often.) So, I stocked up on some glittery nail polish, grabbed some of my glass cabochons, and got to it. I experimented with layering different layers of nail polish until I liked the final result. Thank goodness for nail polish remover; I was able to start over and redo whichever ones didn’t turn out perfect!

I found it pretty relaxing to paint on layers and layers of nail polish while I watched some netflix. Remember how I scored an extra pair of awesome shoes a couple weeks back? I decided to paint them with lots and lots of glitter! I originally got the idea from Kaylah at The Dainty Squid. Funny enough, that blog post is the one that made me fall in love with those shoes enough to order them online! She uses modpodge mixed with glitter in her DIY, but I found that layers of nail polish worked fine. I painted them afterwards with two clear coats of acrylic paint, just in case.

By this point, I just couldn’t stop painting things. (The excessive nail polish fumes might have helped that!) I ended up painting my cell phone case with lots of purple glitter, even sticking on a little astronaut, and painting a speech bubble. I loved the way it looked, but unfortunately it didn’t hold up well to daily use. The case is rubberized, which made it difficult for the nail polish to stay on. Oh well! 

I plan on making some more galaxy necklaces/rings and maybe selling them in my shop! They’re pretty fun to do, and I really like the look of them.

I just listed a handful of new items in my shop including these pendants:

I've been experimenting a bit with a rose mold I made awhile ago. I've found that with just one mold, I can reshape the roses into different sizes and shapes. I've also been making lots of rose rings. They're simple, easy to make, and adorable.

I've also been making jewelry without polymer clay (gasp!) I recently bought some epoxy resin domes. You can buy them in typical cameo sizes (25x18, 40x30, etc) and stick them to any picture or image you want. I  bought some lovely digital collages from Steam-Dust Studios on Etsy, printed them out, and voila!

I think they turned out pretty well! I just put quite a few of these in my shop, and they're only six bucks! Well, I'm off to make some more clay creations while I watch some netflix. I made a mold of a unicorn cameo the other day, so I'm pretty excited to make some fun jewelry with it. I'm thinking lots of pastel colors, pinks, purples, and maybe some glitter!

First Post!

Alright, first time posting on my shinynew blog! I set up this blog this past weekend mainly as a way to focus on something that's really important to me lately: crafting. A couple months ago, I started making jewelry. I've always had an obsession with cameos. My mom and grandmother both have a small collection of them, and so several have been passed on to me over the years.

I am always on the lookout for cameos in thrift stores and secondhand shops. After discovering Etsy, I would buy unset cameos I liked, then find the perfect setting for them.

I started wishing that there was some way to choose the colors used in the cameos and settings, to customize the jewelry I loved so much. So, I started researching how cameos are made. Most factory-made cameos are produced with resin, plastic, or stone. I discovered that people who make custom cameos usually use resin or polymer clay. Both of these methods use molds, usually made of flexible silicone. I decided to learn how to make my own cameos using polymer clay and molds (both purchased and self-made). That was about three months ago, and my obsession has already exploded into my favorite new hobby. I now make my own cameos and settings out of polymer clay, in every color imaginable.

  I spend a lot of my spare time making jewelry now. It's a very relaxing, fulfilling hobby for me. Last month, I opened an etsy shop, "Zombot Shop", to sell my creations. It's been really fun so far, and I definitely want to continue doing it. For this blog, I plan on talking about new things I'm making, crafting/jewelry ideas and inspirations, my shop, and my daily life. Thanks for reading my first post!
